If someone could help with the following conundrum it would be greatly appreciated. I have a 2001 Camry with a sidewinder 6500 installed. I’m having a problem with the remote start.  It was working fine until this summer.

* When I try to remote start it, the starter cranks and the engine turns over and immediately shuts down. This happens three times.

* However, when I place the key in and turn to the on position then remote start it the car runs well except for two more cranks (grinding) by the starter while the engine is running.

*  I tried to do a Tach learn and I don’t get a solid light even after holding in the valet button for 2- 3 minutes.

* Also the shutdown diagnostics indicates 3 flashes = low or no rpm.

* The alarm works fine and the car starts fine when I use the key to start.

Why would the car start with the key in the on position if it  is telling me that there is low rpm? Any ideas as to what to fix or look at? How would I know if it is based on rpm or voltage?

did you install it? perhaps the tach wire is not connected to anything and it was running in voltage monitoring? is also sound as if there is another ignition wire that you are not powering. possibly a connection in the ignition harness came apart.

Thanks for the reply and happy new years to you.

No I didn't install it. The previous owner had it done at Best buy. I Will open it  up and take a look at it. Before doing that do you think increasing the crank time  might help if it is in voltage monitoring?

It depends on how long it cranks for now. if its longer than you would normally crank it with the key right now, and it still doesnt start, then making it crank even longer wont make it start.

Solved: I set it to voltage monitoring and set it to crank for 0.8 seconds. This solved the issue.

I've heard that Tach is better than voltage monitoring. Tach causes less damage to engine and is safer. Is that true? Does anyone know if the 201 toyota camry le 2.4L has an imobilizer?

Immobilizer: I think it was only the XLE that got it. With the engine off and the key removed, look around the tachometer, for a flashing red security light.
But, the immobilizer key was a pretty rare feature on the pre-2001 Camry, and most likely you don't have one.
And yes, tach would be better if you could get it, but if voltage sense works consistently, even when cold, without under-cranking or over-cranking the car's starter, you could leave it as is.
About the initial problem.......There's a nice tach wire available right underneath the glove box, but the people who write the wiring diagrams never bothered to list it.
So, most likely, the installer ran a wire out under the hood to connect to the tachometer signal at or near the engine.
Over time, the connection must have either corroded, vibrated, or been torn loose by an errant mechanic.
I'll bet if you go under the hood, you'll find a loose, non-factory-looking wire. Just try to reconnect that to where it came from, and see if you can program tach again.

Thank you for the response. I will try to locate the wire under hood this weekend. Hopefully it will be warm the weekend. I will post my progress here.

ditto what Chris Luongo said, and to clear the confusion about remote starting while key is in the ignition and ON. with the ignition on, everything is powered up that needs to be, you remote start and the car runs . . . but the remote start doesn't think it started and shut everything back down. however since the key is in the ignition it keeps everything powered up and allows the vehicle to keep running. then the remote start powers back up and cranks to start the car. then does the whole sequence a third time.
tracking? at any rate, if you reconnect tach and re-learn tach you'll be good to go also.
