I have an alpine alarm i bought it in 2003. I am looking at up dating my alarm and i would like to switch brands.  can i swap the brains or would i need to rewire the new plugs to the new alarm?

The plugs won't be the same, unless you can find another Alpine alarm you like.
Depending on how fussy you are, you could either completely remove your old Alpine unit and start over from scratch.........or if you don't mind it being a little less reliable and a little more messy, you could just cut the plugs from the old unit, and splice on the wires from the new unit. In that case, you'd be relying on the quality/reliabity of the 2003 installation.
