ok here goes i have a sidewinder 5000 esp and the scanner on the scanner i connected the red wire to a 12v constant black to ground and when i put the white wire to the orange wire which is the (-) ground when armed i dont have the alarm armed but it lights up when i connect it. on the scanner instructions it says to connect the white wire to negative wire of electrical device (scanner will turn on when the electrical device turns on) am i doing something wrong. i thought i understood orange wire would be a dead wire untill alarm is armed giving the (-) output.

I bet you have the starter disable relay installed. The scanner is "seeing" ground through either the starter or ignition wire, depending how the starter interrupt is wired. Use two diodes with the bands toward the alarm and the other ends to the relay and scanner. That should solve your problem.
