how hard is it to do remote starts?

im getting a part time job at a stereo shop.i know a lot about car audio and have done a handful of alarms/remote starts on my own vehicles(03 cavalier,07 trailblazer,03 escape)i know all the basics like all the ignition wires,tach wire,brake,siren,etc.but im worried about the different bypasses and door locks.like on my escape for the door locks,all i had to do with the locks was hook up the lock and unlock to 2 wires on the car.no relays no nothing.is there a lot of cars like that?should i be sweating remote starts or do u just get used to them.any helpful hints would be great

The two most important things to learn when doing remote starts are:

1. Know what every signal on the remote start is supposed to do and how to verify it with a volt meter.

2. Understand how relays work like the back of your hand.

I've worked with people who could do both of these, one or the other, and none, and the ones that can do both are by far the most successful and most reliable.

Unfortunately I can think of at least 8 or 9 different ways of controling locks, but what Kevin says is spot on as usual.

i didnt realize there were like 9 different ways to control locks.am i getting in over my head.whats the best way to learn about relays?

Start with the relay section here, think of a relay as either a switch or a current amplifier, then ask Kevin, he's the King, I'm only the arch-duke!  Also "i am an Idiot", Chris Wallace and a couple of others are all very knowledgeable, the trick is to ask intelligent questions, lok at t&t's questions, he's a genuine, polite "seeker after knowledge".  Apologies to anyone I've left out. Neg low current, pos ditto, high current (5amps) switching (Euro Fords up tp 98) 1 wire pos and break, one wire neg and break, one wire polarity change (M/Benz vacuum), 1 wire resistive, (Chrysler and some Euro Volkswagens), 2 wire resistive some Chrysler, then there are the motor power wire set-ups AKA 5 wire or relay interrupt such as Euro Hondas or even floating (i.e. not sitting on ground) motor wires where you need 4 relays such as London Taxi front doors (the rears are low current neg) and some US SUVs. Actually that's 12 off the top of my head, rule one DMM and test!
