2003 BMW Z4

I want to add remote soft top control to the car.  I bought the Viper 5101 Rem Start/Keyless.

The soft top lowers via a button on the center tunnel that you hold down until the top is all the way down.  Usually about 10-12 seconds.  I was thinking I could use the Aux on the remote and a timed relay to give it power for 12 secs.  The relay is the PAC TR7 or the DEI one (I cant think of the model number).

Would that work?  Are those the correct bypass's to use?

Also, I read in the 5101's manual that you can program the remote to activate some of the features you normally control by putting the key in the door key hole; Comfort Closure.  On the car, you can put the key in the door and turn it to open and if you hold it in open then the top will go down. Can you make it to where it will put the top down?

Im not concerned about putting the top up.  I'll put it up when Im in the car.

Thanks for the help!

Heres the wiring info: (taken from direct techs)

Soft Top (open/Close): BROWN / red - BROWN / purple     Polarity: (-)      Location: top switch

The problem with simply activating the switch is most likely the igntiion has to be on before the switch will work.  If you can find the top controller and find the switched igntion wire on it you can isolate it, and then energize it, then pulse the top down button.

As far as the comfort closure it really wouldn't work in your case as EVERY time you disarmed the alarm it would lower the top.  You would be best of using an AUX output and setting it to a 30 second  timed output.

Actually you can close the roof by setting your unit for comfort control, you're simply increasing the time on the lock wire.
I'll bet with opening the roof, it can't be done without the ignition on.

I'll use the AUX input for it then.  And yes, the car has to at least be in accessory for the top switch to work.  I havent done any testing with a test light to see if that activates it when the wire is energized or some thing of that nature.

How would this be wired in using the PAC TR7?  I've installed numerous remote starts/keyless/alarms, but never a timed relay or something of this nature.

Thanks!

Don't even bother, if for once Mr. Pierson and myself are in total agreement, believe it. I've had people with 3 series wanting to remote vent the windows, it can't be done without unlocking the vehicle and shutting off factory and aftermarket alarms. When a PAC TR7 or 528t is unpackaged that's where the instructions are you will probably need an extra relay to activate the ignition whilst doing this so more complications with the factory alarm which on a Z4 is controlled through the vehicle's CAN system.

"If for once?"  Don't we agree much more then we disagree?  :)

The problem with activating the ignition is the "chance" that a RAP system will also activate and may require a shut down pulse to the door pin.  This is why I like to go right to the sunroof unit, isolate it, and just make it think power is on - this typically doesn't activate the RAP system so it becomes a bit simpler.

If you can power the ignition (or accessory or whatever circuit it is) without the RAP system kicking in then that would be just as good, if not better!  Howie you would probably know more about the specifics of doing this on a BMW then I ever would - my BMW work has been few and far between.

Sorry Kevin, I was in a facetious mood.
Frankly I've never had to open a roof or windows on disarm, it's not really necessary. I would think you either need a timed relay to turn on the light green ignition wire or as you say, find the processor and its ignition stand off wire, except the damn thing probably uses a data pulse, also there are 19 motors on a 6 series convertible so there's at least one here. Timed say 15 secs NEG. pulse to the switch, branched to relay 85, 86 and 30, 12v+ constant at 30amps, 87 to ignition and branched via a 3amp diode to RED / blue at the puddle lamp.Or feed the neg from the timer via a 1 amp diode to the specific door contact for the driver's door in the processor behind the glove box. (Puddle lamp is pos feed, individual door contacts are neg. feed) At a GUESS it's either BROWN / blue or BROWN / grey with yellow dots). I looked at this on an E46* last week and I think the driver's door was the second.
*E46, X3 and Z4 have the same wiring, X5 = Range Rover and 5 series.
