Just thinking here, if you have a vehicle with a transponder in the key and you happen to have a remote start with a bypass installed, do you still need the special key to start the car (not starting by remote)? Or can you go to the local hardware shop and get a key made for a few bucks and have it work because there is an installed bypass?

still have to have the chip in the key. some vehicles if you remote start it and then put a regular key in it would work. but for the most part no you have to have the chip

there's some hackjob shops out there that just take the chip from the keys and glue it to the cylinder and that's their bypass. that's how i imagine people even hear of stuff like this.

Thanks Monty. I was just wondering because I need another key for my truck and since I have the bypass installed figured a regular key would work...oh well.
zerepdivad....I haven't heard of glueing a chip but I've seen videos of the wrapping a wire around the key and leaving it there.

I'm not really sure what a Passlock is. All I know is I spoke with a guy on ebay who sells Ultra Start telling him I wanted to install a RS in my new truck. He sold me the 1272 and the int-sl+ bypass he said because I had a chip in the key. Once the equipment came in, I went to install it and saw the truck already had an Audiovox RS installed with another little black box I figured was the bypass. The guy who sold me the truck didn't give me a key fob so I bought one on ebay and the remote start works great.
What's the difference between a Passlock and a bypass? Did this guy sell me a bypass when I really didn't need one?

passlock 2 is a resistance based immobilizer that gm uses. the bypass is what is used to temporally feed that Resistance code to the BCM to start the vehicle.

So would a 2 dollar key copied from the local hardware store work in my truck?
