Greetings!

I recently purchased a used 2003 Harley Davidson f-150 (auto tranny) with a Viper 5000 alarm under the dash. I only have one factory key fob, and one factory key. No key fobs for the alarm, and no second key to program another key, so all I have is the brain and the antenna. There is a blue led on my dash that never lights up. I can get a couple of pics of brain if that helps.

So I figure since this thing is already wired up, would it be easy to just get an entire new kit for $80 from http://www.electronicsbonanza.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=12446&sku=8728&src=g

and go to town.

Will this work?

Second part is, I really want remote start than I want an alarm, so is there a unit that I can easily replace this one with, or are the remote start modules still available?

Thanks!

one this to consider ...

if you have never had a remote for the alarm that is in there .. how do you know that the previous owner didnt add a remote start to the unit when it was installed? .... or even remote power windows or other great stuff?

if you are not familiar with the previous owner or the wiring of these units, it might pay to make a run to your local authorized DEI installer and offer them 20 or 30 bucks to tell you exactly what you DO have. it might save you alot of mula.

if the truck has remote start already .. you can add new remotes, turn the alarm on valet (so the alarm part wont work) and just use the remote start and any other non alarm features the truck might have.

Very true. I wonder what just a one way replacement remote costs.

type in viper 5000 remote on ebay. looks like about 40 or so will get you one.

the main reason someone might buy the 5000 over other models available could be either the retained acc power option and/or to have the ability to add 6 more toys to the system. but if the truck already had RAP from the factory, then maybe that will increase the likelyhood of finding more toys!

a DEI familiar tech can figure it all out easily. if you do have a tech investigate, make sure you have them find out where the valet wire for the alarm was connected.

i think it is a 479v remote. if you search ebay and use viper 479v remote you will find more and less expensive ones.

479v is the 2 way remote.

it looks like there are several others that will work with your system.

Cool thanks for the help. Once this blizzard passes I may head over to our local DEI dealer.

I highly doubt (though it is possible) that anyone would go thru the hassle of adding R/S to the 5000 you have. It is much easier to put in a combo unit.

As far as R/S goes, theres no if's, and's, or but's about it you will have to go to a Ford dealer and buy a new key to install a R/S. once you have 2 keys you can program a bypass for the PATS system like a PKALL. Since you dont have any remotes for the alarm, if it were me I'd rip that 5000 out and pick up a 5902 or something like it and have alarm and R/S. It wouldnt ever hurt to have an alarm and if you're doing the install yourself it probably wouldnt be a huge price difference from just a R/S w/ keyless
