I am trying to figure out what all I need to put in an aftermarket alarm in my 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, but keep basic system operation the same or very similar, with regards to start-kill, remote lock/unlock, courtesy lights...main reasons are:

  • one of the factory remotes is dead, the other cannot be far behind
  • need shock/glass sensors as it has been broken into twice in the last 6 months by breaking the door glass

I see a lot about interface modules but the descriptions of how these work and what they do, are all quite vague and seem to mostly refer to adding a remote start, which I am not interested in; I would just like the easiest way to interface to what is there; with the exception of adding the shock/glass sensors and having to use the aftermarket remotes, I'd prefer the door-locks/lights/starter-kill work the same as they do now; if these interface modules allow this by translating the after markey alarms I/O into data messages the factory system can understand, and vice-versa, then great!

thanks...

To install keyless entry on that vehicle, you will need a data module or you will have to go into the door panel and access the contacts on the door lock/unlock switch. The module is much easier.

I am pretty sure they will all work with other branded equipment. We are always replacing alarms because they can not find remotes for their Chinese alarm units. We never have to change a module. We sell the Audiovox Flash Logic pieces. They do require hardware in order to program the vehicle type into the module. There may be others out there that can be programmed without additional hardware.

The DEI MultiDL module will do the door locks thru Data ( OBD2 diagnostic connector Pin2 ) and supply a Door Trigger to the alarm system.  Available "online" for around $25.00.  Should be able to connect to any brand alarm system.  Here is a link for more info :  http://www.xpresskit.com/product.aspx?productid=188

thanks, guys

as best I understand these things, they make it appear to the OEM systems that I used the factory remote; they basically are serial-data to discrete I/O converters? For example, they take serial data, like "door open" and turn that into a ground on the door trigger output, on the module, which is then connected to the door trigger input on the alarm, correct? And take a ground on the lock-output of the alarm, connected to the door-lock input on the module and turn that into serial-data so the OEM security will activate and the doors will lock, correct?

I think I'm happy with the functionality of the OEM system and do not want to lose any of these:

  • lock-1 - lock all doors
  • unlock-1 - unlock drivers door, turn on courtesy lighting
  • unlock-2 - unlock all other doors
  • panic - lights flash, horn honks (easier way to find truck in Six Flags parking lot)
  • immobilizer

the MultiDL appears to be discontinued; a search for "2003 Chevrolet Tahoe" returned 9 matches, on xpresskit.com; 3 of them, I think, are really only applicable to remote start, which I am not interested in and another 2 appear to be different versions of the same thing; it appears that only the XK01 and XK09 have the Panic input. and the difference between those appears to be hood-monitoring and power-window-control; now I just gotta try to find an alarm with a Panic output

While the MultiDL has been discontinued by DEI, it wasn't discontinued because it was a bad unit.  For your

needs, it is ideal.  It only does the door locks ( no remote start / bypass functions ) and can be programmed
for Priority Unlock.  It is still available in NIB unused condition at various places on the internet (  & EBay ).

The XK01 module is similar but has the bypass function and needs to be flashed with AMDL firmware.  The MultiDL

comes pre-loaded.

The Immobilizer ( starter kill ) feature can be done by the alarm system.  Some aftermarket alarm systems have

a "Car Finder" feature ( that flashes the parking lights and beeps the horn just 5 times ).

Soldering is fun!

won't the module enable the OEM security, which I assume includes the immobilizer?

if I try to use the aftermarket alarms panic/finder, then I will have to tap directly into the parking lights

I know I've seen some alarms with a dedicated panic/alarming output, anyone have any suggestions? anyone know if this is a pulsed output or a latched output? guess I could always use an AUX output, if it's programmable
