Hey all....

first I just want to say what an incredible site this is, I love the innanet ;)...

I bought a couple of Autopages RS-60's at XS Cargo for 20 bucks, I am not an automotive Nube, however electronics make me nervous a bit, well alot, mostly because I am a mechanical guy and still havent found a safe way to keep the smoke inside the wires, no luck putting it back in either.

That being said I want to install one of these units in a 2003 Corolla, so I went to Bulldog security and read the wiring info it was all pretty straight forward except for this Note, I will copy and paste.

 NOTE #1: TOYOTA'S TRANSPONDER SYSTEM, Requires Bypass Module: this is required for

the 2005 model year and up:
(For Remote Starting Only) Part #791 Bypass, (Requires Extra Key) for Operation.
(For Remote Starting Only) Part # PK-ALL Bypass. (No Extra Key Required for
Operation) 2-KEYS Required to Program Module.

PARDON??? a second key???, so first question. They mention the year 2005, my girlfriends car is a 2003, does this apply.

If so can some one maybe briefly explain or point my head in the right direction.

I am hopeing to also install this in my own vehicle, a 98 Volvo S70 T5 Automatic, anything I should be aware of. Is this an intimidating job?

any help is appreciated and once again, this site is really sumthin wicked awesome.

Will the 2003 Corolla start with a plain $1.99 hardware store copy of a working key?  DEI and iDatalink do not list a bypass for the 2003 Corolla, so it might not need one.  ( Canadian cars are sometimes different than those made for sale in the states.)

I am guessing that the car would take any old key, really thi car is nothing fancy, I am inclined to think I wouldn't need a bypass however, if I install this thing is there a chance that I could render the GF's car inoperable.

There always seems to be this cloud of impending doom that seems to acompany my lack of knowledge if you catch my drift.

Correctme if I am wrong, When wiring this RS-60 up I am spliceing into wiring, so worst case scenario I just unplug the thing... I hope... And the car will still operate as it once did?

The Bulldog wiring info includes pictures to assist in locating the correct wires.  It is still necessary to verify these wires with a Digital Multi Meter prior to making any connections.  The connections should be soldered and insulated with quality electric tape.  Connecting to the wrong wire can cause problems, not only to the RS-60 but also to the vehicle.  Blown fuses are the simple things that can happen.  Killing the vehicles BCM ( computer ) is more serious and costly.

The RS-60 is only a remote start system with door unlock capability.  That is important on Toyota's as they typically ignore the factory keyless FOBs while the engine is running. 

The most reliable method of remote starting in cold climates is in Tach Mode.

There are only two wires from the RS-60 that you won't use / connect ( H3/5 White & H3/7 Yellow ).  All other

wires are used and should be connected.  If the Corolla has the Factory Alarm, H3/7 connects to Keysense.

For a successful install :

Plan - obtain all install manuals, wires guides available.  Read and understand the install manual.  Obtain   all the tools and parts required.
Prep - Remove the vehicles panels for access.  Locate and verify all wires.  Position the RS-60 brain.
Install - Route the wires, cut to length, solder and insulate.
Program & Test - Install fuses and program remotes & tach.  Test remote start and door unlock.
Finish - Secure all wires with tie wraps, looms or electric tape.  Avoid sharp metal & rotating / moving parts.  Re-install any trim panels.

Plan on six hours of fun under the dash.

Thats awesome thanks so much for all your input I am going to head to princess auto to find the connectors I need might not finish it today but I should have a real good start thanks to the advice in the last post

Is there a Install manual on line for this model?? Couldn't fine a RS60 at Autopage site.

I think it was second listed in the google search I did, the first in the search was your question, so it really is a s simple as searching RS-60 install manual, first will be your question then a link to a PDF.

BTW I chickend out, I have huge sausage fingers, and I didn't have the courage to see making the connections I needed to with the limited amount of wire available.

so I called a guy in Ajax who imidiately told me I needed a bypass when I said I confirmed already that I didn't through this forum, he argued you can't belive everything on the net.When I asked how much for just the install he said $250...  Pardon?  Then he said it was because he had to install a bypass, told him I didn't need it, then he said $150. then it went to $120, then I thought is this guy for real, sounds like a shady character.

Next question anyone know of a reputable installer in the eastern of the GTA.

If the guy is reputable, $120 is a good price seeing as this RS 60 is a very basic remote start. I paid $200 to have a Viper 571 installed.

I did my sisters 2005 Corolla last month installing a Viper 5301 and I spent 9 hours testing, verifing wires and then making my connections.Hers needed a ByPass unit.

Wow okay its nice to know that it really does take that long, I was gonna start at one pm today then I thought doodie I gotta work early and the GF needs her car in the A.M.

I always factor in having an issue and after takeing the dash apart to where I needed to be I looked at the wires and thought this is gonna be like surgery upside down not to mention its a littlecold and windy this time of year here.

I did verify that I do not need a transponder though. So here is a question, did you use the Tach. wire and if so did you hook it up at the ECU?

Or did you hook it up on a coil.

Also where did you mount the brains of the unit? Any help would be grateful
