HI my 1st post!

i got a viper 5501 + idatalink ads-al ca installed in a 2010 camry w/ key for 150 labor cost (my parts)

the viper system is suppose to tell you the temp, when a door(s) is open and allow you to turn on the rear defrost, but mine doesnt.

they told me that all the normal features of the remote would work except thinks like window control etc which require extra parts, but now they told me the rear defrost feature is not included in the install. the guy keeps insisting these are extra features like window closer etc. BUT I dont think these normal features are like the window closing option, its just a normal feature included with the system and requires no extra parts. why would anyone buy a good system and install only basic features. after telling the owner he said bring it by tomorrow and i will have them fix it. the trunk shows open on remote when its open, the doors should too.

am i wrong by expecting them to have included the deforst feature etc? because they told me all normal features included with your remote will work when i called them (except things like window open/close etc options which require extra parts).

I wanted to ask your opinion on how you usually install these systems. do you include all the basic features like rear deforst, temp check, open door notice on remote with the install?

thank you the12volt

I had a Viper 5301 installed in my wife's 09 Corolla at best buy. The price of the Viper included "basic install". At this best buy it DID NOT include connecting the horn honk feature, trunk release or the rear window defrost. Features like that were extra, as in, extra time, parts, (relays),  and $$$$.2010 camry, viper 5501, datalink features? -- posted image.   I didn't mind paying for these features to be connected, just wish it was more up front as to what BASIC was.  Total cost to me for the install and features I wanted connected, $700.00 I spent $200.00 for a Viper 571 install. I supplied the parts. No special features.

That being said, I have spent some time doing this as a hobby for myself as a DIYer. Learning as I go from reading the info on this site from other postings. I have on average spent 9 hours under the dash of my relatives vehicles installing mostly Viper 5301/5701 systems.  I spent 3 days doing 530T window modules in my 2000 Taurus wagon.

So If you only paid 150 for the labor on your vehicle for the install, I would say you got a bargain. Those EXTRA features are and should be extra cost and parts. My humble opinion.

$150 is probably around the cheapest you'd find for labor only, especially if you're supplying the parts yourself.
If you're denying them the profit on selling the product, and they're barely making anything on the install, it's hard to expect them to get all fancy and hook up all the extra stuff for free.
Many shops won't even install customer-supplied product, especially during remote-start season. I'll install customer product, but usually charge a little mroe, and obviously I'll only guarantee my installation---if the product should fail, nothing I can do about that.
Anyway....
---Your unit is only remote start and keyless entry. It's not an alarm, and is not designed to alert the user when a door is open. I don't think it even has that capability.
---Rear defroster is a heavy-gauge white wire that exits the fuse box, and then runs down to the driver's kick panel toward the rear of the car.
The installer would have to use a relay, and interrupt (cut in half) the original Toyota wire and run it through the relay "5-wire" style.
I know of no shop that includes rear defroster control as part of basic installation.
---The unit you have should have a built-in temperature sensor right in the brain. I'm pretty sure you would just press a sequence of buttons on the remote for it to display the car's temperature.
I'm really surprised that one doesn't work....I don't think it's anything on the installer's part; it's just right there on the brain. Maybe there's a programming setting that's required to enable it? I don't know.
I have had a couple of units (both DEI and other brands) in my car that show the internal temperature. In my experience, they are just a toy and not very accurate.
The alarm brain is almost always mounted way under the dash near other heat-producing components, and also the brain itself makes a small amount of heat (from the internal relays) when the remote starter is on.
Every one of those units I've tried, the displayed temperature seems to always be somewhere between 20 and 50 degrees higher than the real temperature.

thanks for the reply

the system doesnt have alarm but its suppose to show when the door is open, i dont care about the temp but i did want the rear defrost working. most shops were asking for 150 so i asked them all  'my system has ability to show when the door is open, able to turn on rear defrost etc and if those basic features would be included with the install?' and they all said yes,  i had an appointment today for another shop but i went to theirs becuse we are same nationality. I will call the other shops and ask again and record my conversation with them so i can play it back to the installer. these are basic features of the unit. they took a decent unit and turned it into the most basic 2way unit. its a shame because the owner doesnt know about remote start and seams nice and wants to fix the issue but he has an installer who was in my face trying to intimidate me into believing him.
