Door trigger help

I'n new to this site, and appreciate any help anyone can give.

This is also the first time I've installed an alarm, but I am somewhat knowledgeable in electrical/electronics.

First of all you can all laugh, I bought an impulse res-r (I know, but I bought it before I found your site) there are basically no instructions with this unit. (I bought it mainly for the keyless entry, but I'd like the rest of it to work)

Here's my problem, (1998 Ford Taurus no fac alarm or keyless) It won't sense when the door(s) is opened, it just stays armed. I hooked up the +door trigger  to the BLACK/ blue wire going to the dash light. But this light does have a delay when the doors are opened/closed. I'm assuming this is the problem, because everything else works OK with the system.

It does know when the doors are closed (- trigger) because the passive arm activates.

Is there somewhere else I should connect the +door trigger?

It's probably simple for you guys but I just don't know where to start.

The door wire for the Taurus is a BLACK/ LIGHT BLUE . Hook this wire up to the PURPLE wire on the RES-R unit. Did you test the wire that you had to see if this wire is in fact a ( + ) ouotput when door is open ??

I don't have a test light, just a multi-tester. when I test it with the positive lead on the purple(alarm) wire and the neg lead to the vehicle ground, it does indeed test +12 volts. Obviously it shows -12 when I reverse the leads.            I double checked the connector that came with the alarm -- OK there.  Is this the proper way to test the connection? What do you think I should try next?

I just realized that this is only a remote starter unit.... not an alarm !?! The security feature of this system is so that when you remote start the car and the doors are open while trying to remote start it won't work. Did you think this was a full function alarm as well ?

I thought so. Because it tells you i the so-called instructions how to "arm" and "disarm" the system. It has a "panic" button on the remote, you'd think it would be pretty simple for them to make the horn blow if you opened the doors while it was "armed". I guess I should have researched a little more before making an impulse buy. (pardon the pun)

It's OK cause I really just wanted the lock/unlock/trunk feature. There's nothing in it to steal. Thanks for your help, maybe I'll upgrade in the future.

One other thing I forgot to ask, Do I have to hook up the tach wire?

It says it's optional, but I don't want it to try to crank the engine again if it's already started. I'm assuming thats what this connection does (determine if the engine is running) Thanks again for helping.

What you have to do is to make sure that the dip pin switch # 5 is ON for automatic tach sensing. If the car does not start , then you will need to attach the WHITE/ BLACK wire to the tach wire on the car.

The car starts but shuts off after several seconds, repeats this a few times and then apparently gives up. I'm guessing I will have to hook up the tach wire. What are the reasons you do or don't have to connect this?
