remote start features, need your input

 Hi I am new to this forum, and I need some quick help learning about remote start features and terminology.  I have a 2000 buick regal, and all I am interested in is a remote starter function, and maybe door unlock feature.  I have no need for security feature.  I think i would like a viper smartstart system, as I have an android phone, but they have several setups and I just want to know which one is best for my simple needs.  I would even consider a regular nonsmart system, but I work in an aluminum mill, and I am afraid the signal would get cancelled due to all the high voltage in our factory. Unless you have done a decent amount of 12volt wiring, I would not take this task on yourself. As some people on here have learned, even we can't help you once it comes down the nitty gritty and one mistake can lead to a lot of money in damage to electrical components. If you do decide to take it on yourself, plan for an entire weekend for that car so you can take your time.. it will take a lot of it. 1 way vs 2 way refers to the signal between the remote and the antenna. With a 1 way system, the remote will only send the signal. Your only verification is visually seeing the the vehicle. With a 2 way system, the remote will send the signal and receive back confirmation of the commands. So if you cannot see the vehicle, you will know whether it started or not. There are other options besides the SmartStart. Compustar (Firstech LLC) also makes a phone controlled system called the DRONE II. I personally like the Compustar systems better because they tend to be more reliable, they offer an easy bypass solution (BLADE modules), and the remotes are fully upgradeable without having to replace the entire unit. Just purchase the antenna / remote you want, swap the antenna, and program the remotes. The downside to Computsar systems is that they are very hard to find because they are not supposed to be sold by non-authorized dealers. Also keep in mind that if you do end up buying one yourself from ebay or pretty much any online retailer, Directed Electronics (Viper, Python, etc) nor Compustar will honor the unit's warranty. The warranty is only valid on units installed by authorized dealers.Kenny

I have done a couple of bulldog remote starter installations on my vehicles, so I am not completely in the dark, if I have some good instructions with the merchandise I buy. I am much better at mechanics than electronics however, due to my career as an industrial mechanic.  If they are no more complicated than the bulldogs, I should have no problem. Do they provide access to wiring diagrams to each specific model car? fiddlebick

Wow, after finding an online installation diagram for the drone unit,  I don't think I am at all qualified to install one.  I didnt' understand much of it at all...way more complicated than the bulldog key fob unit!fiddlebick

All remote start systems require the same wire connections; some install manuals are just more basic due to the fact that they are written specifically for professionals. The part that makes it more difficult is the vehicle itself. That car isn't the hardest in the world, but it isn't the easiest either. It's been a while, but from what I can remember, everything was pretty tightly packed in that dash which made some of the wires a little tough to find.
