viper 5501 , 2006 subaru outback

I have a problem that I need help with. I have tried searching and can't seem to find my specific problem. I purchased a refurbished Viper 5501 Remote starter to put in my wife's 2006 Subaru Outback with factory theft. I have done about a dozen remote starters before, only a couple with a factory theft system. The problem I am having is when I hit the remote start button on the remote I get a "Remote Start Error" message on the remote then the lights flash 8 times (Neutral safety wire has no ground or the neutral safety switch is Off.) I do have the Neutral Safety connected to a good ground. I have triple checked all my other connections, I CANNOT get it to even activate anything during a remote start attempt. No interior activity what so ever. It will lock & unlock no problem. I guess i want to know if there is a way to test this "Manufacturer Refurbished Unit" to see if it is defective on the remote start side. There is a terminal "H3/3 ORANGE ACCESSORY OUTPUT" that looks like it got hot before, (this is how it came to me) the pin is discolored and the white plastic around it is browned as well, I did open it up and it appears to be connected inside. Which is why i'm thinking this unit is defective. Any help is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks, in advance.

Simple way, connect the BLACK/ white from the 5501 directly to ground, make sure the vehicle is in neutral and try the R/S. On further thought, 1)The vehicle's NSS wire, does that go to ground ONLY when the vehicle is in neutral? 2) Is there a clutch switch that you would normally have to depress before starting? 3) Rather stupid of me but is this vehicle auto or manual? If manual you proceeded correctly, if auto, just ground that BLACK/ white and program the unit as an auto, remote start menu, feature 1.

That orange wire is a negative ACC output to feed a relay for a second or third ACC, it goes to ground after R/S enables. Not needed on your install.

On a 5501 There are BOTH a neutral safety toggle switch that came with the alarm as well as a black wire with a white stripe in one of the harnesses of the alarm. The black white wire needs to see ground and the toggle switch needs to be activated in order for the car to start. Then after that you may get a manual mode error which means the alarm needs to be programmed to automatic transmission mode. Good luck.Gary Sather

Sorry T. I forgot. I always blob some solder over the socket contacts or plug it in, cut off the switch and solder together, as for the switch:- A) Too short a cable. B) Looks terrible on any car built after the 60s!

Sorry, the car is Automatic Trans. I have the BLACK/ white wire connected directly to tested ground. I have reprogrammed the unit to Automatic mode. H3/3 ORANGE ACCESSORY OUTPUT Connect this wire to the accessory wire that powers the climate control system. How is the Orange wire not needed in my install? How does the heater get its power? Either way, why do i not get any remote start activity? other than the error message.

Your heater gets its power when the car is running and all the accessories are powered up. But did you plug in the toggle switch? It is also a neutral safety. It either needs to be plugged in and on or as howie said plug it in and cut the switch off and put the wires together.Gary Sather

I did not plug the little switch in, it is only two black wires, I will have to try that next weekend, I gave up today and just unplugged everything and tucked the wiring up out of the way, (spent 8 hours on it today and now iv'e had to walk away before my anger gets the best of me, lol) I guess i thought that that switch is just for valet mode, i have never installed it on previous units. i appreciate all the quick responses. If the switch is not plugged in and in the proper position then THAT'S the neutral safety error problem for sure if that other black white wire is grounded. Plug that switch in and as long as its activated that will fix the errorGary Sather

The valet switch is built in to the antenna on your alarm. This switch is actually more of an override switch for the remote start. Or a mechanics override. But if not active it errors as a neutral safety errorGary Sather
