Hi all. I purchased a used SUV that came with an avital remote start installed. Everything worked fine (door lock/unlock & remote start) until about a month ago.
I'm not sure what caused it to stop working but nothing on the remote works. The battery has been changed and the light on the remote turns on when buttons are pressed.
I bought a valet button and tried to reprogram the remote using the instructions here:
http://www.directeddealers.com/manuals/IG/Avital/N4103%202012-01%20web.pdf
But it's not working. To make things more difficult the horn wire (brown) is disconnected so I have less feedback to go off of.
Here's what happens:
I leave the driver door open (although I've tried closed as well). I turn the key to ON. Within the 5 seconds I push the valet button. Within another 5 seconds I hold the valet button. At this point the light on the Avital module begins to blink. The manual says it should blink once but for some reason it continues to blink. While holding the valet I then press the lock button (I've also tried holding). I release the valet, turn the key to off and take it out. At that point nothing has changed.
I've also tried running the remote start shutdown diagnostics and it works, giving me 4 flashes which means Transmitter Shutdown.
The normal remote for my car works fine. But it's getting cold and I'd like to be able to use the remote start. Does anyone know what could be going wrong here? I'd like to avoid going somewhere and paying to have it fixed if I can do it myself.
Thanks a bunch.

Try unplugging the antenna for like 10 seconds and plugging it back in. Sometimes it works. Also check the wiring going to the antenna there is 3 small wires that could get broken. I had to replace an antenna wire yesterday for a broken wire.

Unplug the 6pin main wiring harness for about 5 mins and plug it back in. Ive had a bunch of 4103s like this and most of the time this fixes it.

I went out today and unplugged the 6-pin Heavy Gauge Relay along with the Antenna wire. I set a timer for 5 minutes and plugged them back in. Then I tried programming the remote and nothing changed.
What troubles me are the steps for programming the remote:
1. Turn key to the ON position
2. Within 5 seconds, press and release Valet button one time.
3. Within 5 seconds, press and hold the Valet button. The LED will flash one time and the horn honks to
confirm entry into remote programming.
4. Press the Lock button ( or the single button ) on the remote control.
5. The horn honks to confirm the remote has been programmed.
6. Release the Valet button, and turn the key to the Off position.
7. The horn sounds one long honk to confirm that remote programming has been exited.
When I get to step 3 the LED flashes but not once - multiple times. Something must be going wrong - but what?

Are you sure it's flashing more than once ? It should flash once then about 3 seconds later flash once again and it will repeat this until you press a button on the transmitter.   Could you hook the horn back up might be eaiser than trying to watch the LED. Not sure what kind of SUV you have but it shouldn't be anything hard to hook back up

Well the horn wire is actually cut and I'm not sure I'd know what to do to hook it back up. It's a 2009 Kia Sportage.
It blinks, then there's a pause of about 1 and a half seconds, then blinks again, pause and repeats until it's blinked about 5-6 times. Then it stops.

The horn wire should be blue running down the column harness.
If your getting into programming then it could be a bad antenna, wire, or remote

What does the LED do when you're not in programming mode? Does it flash or is it off?

Just ordered a new remote (should come Friday). I had dropped this one in a parking lot for a short amount of time so there's a possibility it was damaged. If that doesn't work I'll order a wire & antenna. And if that doesn't work I give up! lol
Thanks for everyone's help. I'll let you know if something works.

Well I got the new remote today and tried programming it. The first time didn't work but the second time did! So my problem must have been a bad remote.
Thanks everyone for your help. It saved me time and money which is always appreciated!
