I've used the DEI prox sensors before and the consensus seems clear about mounting the sensor on a metal surface and positioning the sensor lengthwise, aligned to the front and rear of the vehicle.
The instructions for the Omega sensor just say to mount it in the center of vehicle. Can I mount it lengthwise facing the doors and above the body of the vehicle?

I haven't used the Omega proximity sensor, so I can't say if it will work as well as it can or not in that orientation, but every one I've ever installed needed to be adjusted (sensitivity plus location and/or orientation) to get the desired results. Give it a shot and let us know how it works out for you.

OK... The module doesn't seem to mind being placed above the body at all. IF there's a difference in front/side orientation it is very minor, so much so it could just be coincidental to way I was testing it.
The big advantage with the Omega sensor is that it's VERY small. It's slightly bigger than the DEI shock sensor but about half the height. It also seems to recycle quicker than the DEI unit (ie. after it detects motion, the delay before it presents another trigger to the brain is faster). It's also about half the price.
Sooo... I don't see any reason not to use this sensor over the DEI counterpart. YMMV.
