why do you need illuminated entry? the way i understand it is it turns on when you disarm/unlock your car using the remote. but you dont need the car to be illuminated unless you are in it and when you do get in it illuminates by itself because you open the door. please explain what its purpose is.

It helps you to locate the vehicle at night in a crowded parking lot as well as see inside the vehicle before you open the door or enter it at night.

Three reasons. One is a stupid chick feature, one helps get attention, and one is REALLY useful.
Stupid Chick Feature: When you unlock the car it lights up, so you can see if anyone is hiding inside waiting to rape you.
Attention Getting Feature: When someone breaks into the car, the domelight flashes on and off just like the parking lights, to attract more attention from passersby.
REALLY Useful Feature: The domelight stays on for 30 seconds after unlocking, or until you turn on the ignition---whichever comes first. If you step into the car quickly enough, you have a light source so you can see what you're doing while you put your belongings down and start the car.
Also, some of the smarter units also turn the domelight on whenever you shut the car off, to help you pick up your belongings again before getting out.
