01 VW beetle remote starter

The 01's should have the Immobilizer (Switchblade key).  The only place to get doorlock wires is at the keyswitch in the door.... not the door switches... has to be the exterior chamber harness.  Short pulses, double unlock(or single for driver's priority!)  Here's something neat.... wanna roll the windows up and down?  Same wires, longer pulse (latched, timed).  Might as well do trunk release as well, negative pulse, gotta pull two wires into the door anyways, make it a third (hint, REAL PITA to run wires into the door!).  Tach is found at the ECU under the driver's side top dash panel (Take centre panel on top of dash, slide towards windshield, remove, 3 T20 screws near windshield , then the two large flat pieces come out.  Then 5 more T20 on the next panel underneath that, then there's the ECU)  Tach is light GREEN/ red on the left connector (TDI).  For a gasser, go to a coilpack underneath hood for tach.  If it's a diesel, there's NO glowplug light wire at the cluster that you can use... everything is multiplexed or part of the CAN bus. (same goes for tach).  For glowplug, set it for a timed delay, 20 seconds is lots.  Also, Parking brake is found at relay #173 (DRL relay) at relay bank under dash.  You could go to the parking brake itself if you've got a couple hours to kill taking apart the centre console :-) .  Oh, doorpin is in the door as well.  Everything coming out of the door is multiplexed, so digging around in the kickpanel is futile at best... I think you can get trunk, but that's about it AFAIK.  

Once you do one, you'll see that they aren't bad at all to work on, just different. And, the added bonus???  All the Golfs, Jettas, and NB's are on the same basic platform (known as the MKIV chassis) so there are numerous similarities (Add the audi A4 to this as well!).  I spent around 25 hrs on my own 2001 TDI 5spd. NB disassembling the car and familiarizing myself with VW wiring/build techniques.....  very different way of doing things over there in VW land!.....    Have fun, take your time, use your meter to your advantage!

BTW.... my 2004 Jetta Wagon TDI will be here this week.....  I can't wait to take that sucker apart!

No tranponder on mine. think they started that on all the dub's in 2000... ?

the transponder is in the middle of the key, near the end of the metal part, just before the plastic. Just cut apart the 555u so that the end of the key will stick out throught the 555u, and make sure that the transponder in the key is in the middle of the coil on the u. Just did a 03 today, lucky me.

use the valet/service key in the 555U......  it fits. (it's the non switchblade FWIW :-))  We add an extra hour for the VW/Audi stuff due to the amount of disassembly/reassembly time.  Other than that.......  not too bad to do.
