Funny, I am dealing with the same thing on a 1996 4Runner.  I am installing a Viper 550ESP which also has remote start.  I had another viper alarm in there already to installing the alarm part was easy.  The alarm works perfectly so no problems at all there.  Now I am having trouble with the remote start part.  I hooked up all the relays and it does not seem to work (I do not have the hoodpinswitch, brake switch, tach input or neutral safety hooked up yet.....but it did not seem that this would prevent it from starting).

Here are my relay hookups:

Red => white

Red => WHITE/ red

Pink => BLACK/ red

Pink => BLACK / YELLOW

Orange => Blue/Red

Purple => Black (w/ sliver dots)

I can take a pic if someone wants to see.  I really need some help to get this thing working.

Not sure if your model is similar to the 550 HF, but I would guess it would be. According to the installation manual for the Viper 550 HF, you must connect the neutral safety wire to ground if the vehicle is an automatic and it already has a neutral safety switch. Not connecting this wire would prevent the remote system from operating. Hope this helps

Ahhhh, I bet that is where I am going wrong.  I will hook it to ground and see if it works.  I'll post back tomorrow if I am still unable to get it to work.  In the meantime any more ideas would be helpful.  Thanks!

OK, I am beginning to get somewhere.  I have now gotten it started but it wants to die right away.  I do not have tyhe tach wire hooked up yet so that may have something to do with it.  I also do not have the hoodpin or brake switch hooked up either.  Grounding the neutral safety switch did the trick to get it started but I need help to keep it going.  Let me know if you guys have any ideas.

OK I finally got it running by routing the tach wire to the diagnostic port in the engine compartment but I want to run my tach wire to the ECU.  Does anyone know which wire it is at the ECU for a 1996 4runner?

This is that last darn thing before I can button the whole thing up.......very frustrating......please help!

Cool, I finally got it hooked up right once and for all!!!   I took my tach wire hookup from behind the instrument cluster on the dash.  It turned out to be a black wire in the center of the middle connector behind the cluster.  I just kept probing with my multimeter (set to AC not DC) until I found one that varied with engine RPM.  It was a bear to do it in the freezing cold and to have to tear even more of the dash apart.  I gave up on getting a signal fromt he ECU.....just too dificult for one person to do.  Much easier to just sit in the driver's seat and step on the gas while probing.  Worked great and I am finally ready for winter!
