I'm wanting to install the 996a into my truck and have a couple questions.

1) It's already cold here so I would like to install the remote start some night after work and complete the alarm portion of it within a couple weeks when I have a little more time.  Is there a problem with this or anything that I should know?

2) Is there a way to tie into the existing factory keyless entry system to utilize their single/double unlock?  Is that necessary or does the unit do that too with or without relays?

3) What's the difference between the 996, 996a, 996c, etc?

4) There are several unused output channels so it appears for my unit in the manual.  I was thinking of maybe installing an anti-carjack device that would throw a relay to kill the fuel pump from away from the vehicle.  Is this horribly unwise?  Illegal?  Even still...any suggestions on the wiring?  Any other neat things to do with the extra channels?

I'll think up more.

Thanks,

Mark

1) i dont think so...some of the audiovox alarms have to be installed full in order to have the remote start working, we sell audiovox alarms and i have installed several of them...but we dont have the 996

2)i dont think you need a double pulse to unlock your doors...im almost sure you dont, but if you do, there should be a wire on the lock/unlock harness coming off the alarm brain that will output a 2nd unlock pulse if you press the unlock button twice

3)i dont know

4)i would not recommend the fuel pump thing.  as far as your extra channels, you could buy a window module which would automatically roll your windows up for you when you set your alarm, and while ur alarm is set, you could crack them...or roll them all the way down.  or u could use for a trunk pop...but u dont have a trunk, im just sayin what it could be used for.  maybe you could use it to trigger ur headlights everytime you hit the button for that option,  you could have a little fun flashing ur headlights at people who walk in front of your vehicle! lol

In general I agree with the last reply.  I have installed well over 50+ 996's within the past year.

1) The "alarm" portion of the install is not that time consuming.  Keep in mind that you alread have to use the wires in the ignition harness for the remote start.  The additional work for the "alarm" is only the door locks, door trigger, the remote start switch, and the momentary switch.  It would be worth the time to complete the entire installation.

2) Unfortunately there is not an effective way to tap into the factory keyless entry to utilize the unlock features.  The 996 does have that same capability, but it does require an additional relay to perform the function.  The installation manual details how to wire the relay for this feature.

3) I have not heard of the APS-996a or APS-996c.  I would double check your source to make sure that information is accurate.

4) Lastly, I would not touch the fuel system as well.  You are installating an electical device, which could void factory warranties if there were a problem.  The output channels can be used for any number of things, and Audiovox offers so many because the 996 is there top of the line model for the Prestige series alarms.  Some of my typical installations for the options include: window roll up/down, mercury sensors, microwave (prox ) sensors, glass breaking sensors, tilt switches, garage door openers, etc.

The 995c was the one made for Curcuit city, is it possible that the 996c was also?

Thanks for the replies.  I hadn't heard of the 996c either until I saw it mentioned in one of the forums.  The only reason that I could think of not to do the fuel pump cut-off was in case of the relay failing that your car wouldn't run...which I guess would be a good reason to carry a spare.  Any other suggestions for a remote engine kill that doesn't involve the fuel delivery system?

The "a" is for the newest model that works with the new telematics module. The unit also uses the hyper bright blue LED. The remotes should also have super bright led's that are flashights for the remotes. It is a great unit with a ton of extra channels. The telematics module that plugs into it is the cl-100. It plugs into the telematics port of the brain. You call an 800 number and you can arm and disarm the alarm, unlock and lock the doors, start your car, locate the vehicle and enable the carjack mode. The best thing is it is a free service. No monthly fee. I have the module in front of me right now. It will retail for $199 and I think it's going to be a hit. The module itself is only 1 inch by 3 inches big. I have not opened it up yet so I am only going by what my distributor and the literature I have on it. I have installed a bunch of there new alarms with the "a" and I am quite impressed with the new smaller brains and extra features. I have always liked Audiovox alarms as they have been very reliable. The remotes are very nice with the carbon fiber look. The built in flashlight is pretty neat too, even though I feel it is a novelty.
The 996 has the two step unlock capability but you will have to add a relay. The keyless entry module on your vehicle is in a bitch of a spot to get to but you can get your wires there for the locks and a few other things. I would not cut the fuel off as that can cause you more problems with driveability. GM has a bulletin warning about doing that and with cutting the ignition. They warn that it can cause the catalytic converter to fail. It is a very interesting article. I would do the install in one shot and get it over with. You will need to bypass the passkey 2 also. The new 996 has a special port also for bypasses. A very nice piece. Good luck,
DanDan

DanDan is right on target, and I'm interested in getting the 996a.  I will have to check with my distributor.

I hope all the feedback is helpful......good luck
