How does it work? My alarm has either a + or - input. Not sure what it is sensing? Can anyone explain how it is working?

what kind of car do you own?
one car might have neg others might have pos.
taken ur car, say its negative trigger(no need for the pos wire), which senses if the doors are open or not during the state of arming.
when arming, if someone open ur door for whatever reason, ur alarm goes off.

I understand that but I don't understand what the alarm is sensing? Is a circuit being completed or is it just sensing polarity or?

The alarm will senses 12v, or ground.

So on a negative door trigger system, when the alarm is armed its looking for 12v comming from the door trigger, when it does and the alarm is armed if the door is opened the pin switch then looses 12v. and will show ground, setting off the alarm because the alarm is no longer getting 12v from the door trigger.

On a positive door trigger system, when the alarm is armed its looking for a ground signal comming from the door trigger, when it does and the alarm is armed if the door is opened the pin switch then will read 12v  setting off the alarm because the alarm is no longer getting  a ground signal from the door trigger.
