Ultrastart 1250 in a Frontier

Just installed an UltraStart 1250 in my truck yesterday, but I have a possible issue. Everything works except for the lock stage. The UltraStart keyfob unlocks the doors, the remote start portion works, programming works fine, and the parking lights flash when they should. However, the lock button only flashes the parking lights without locking the doors. Normally, Id assume its just a bad connection. But, Ive re-soldered the lock connection twice, and then I noticed that I hooked the horn output wire to an incorrect lead on the steering column harness (hooked it to Grn/Rd instead of *light*Grn/Red). I dont think this did any damage to the locking portion of the brain, but I figured Id post here to see if anyone thinks it might have. Otherwise, the only things I can think of are a bad connection and possibly a bad relay in the brain itself. My money is on a bad connection, hopefully Im right. Thanks!!! -Chris

Not yet, I ran out of time yesterday, and didnt have time this morning before work. Figured Id get all my options together and test them at once when I get home. Mostly Im just worried I might have fried something inside, but I dont see how the horn output being connected to an incorrect lead would have anything to do with the door lock relay (especially considering unlock works fine as well). Im guessing I should see voltage on the lock lead from the 1250, when I press the lock button? -Chris

If U check it from your 1250, probably 250 - 500 MA unless U used Relays.Your 1250 Lock output may not be strong enough, so if U have MA output from your 1250 then U will need Relays for Lock / UNLockMO

OK, thanks, Ill check that. The manual lists the output as 500ma. I figured that was enough (talked to a couple people about what I would need, and everyone said 500ma is enough to trigger lock and unlock). The same 500ma works with unlock, but I guess anything is possible. Just for reference, how would I hook up the relay? As far as I know, the brain has internal relays for lock, unlock, etc. I dont think I would want to send 12V over the line, would I? In that case, I wouldnt know how I would want to wire the relay up. Thanks!!! -Chris

Most the time the output from RS/Alarm modules will work, but there R vehicles that require more than 500MA to work.

FYI - figured it out. Apparently the flashing security light being in the truck does NOT mean I have the factory security system (go figure). Hooked the door lock lead to lt grn/red wire at the SECU (which is the door lock lead if you *dont* have the security system) and the locks work fine now. Might switch the unlock over to the alternate wiring, but not sure yet (unlock seems to work fine). Thanks!!!! -Chris

You don't need relays. The brain does not have internal relays. They are low current outputs, but that is all you need for this truck. Have you tried taking a jumper wire from the wire that you think is the truck's lock wire and tapping it to ground to see if it locks? I have a feeling you have the wrong lock wire.
