Dead battery - now alarm won't shut off

Stupid newbie question I'm sure.  Did a search, but couldn't find anything directly on point.

My story:  My girlfriend and I were recently on holiday.  She had more time than I did, so I came back a bit early.  She asked me to start her car to make sure the battery didn't die.  Well, too late, the battery was dead.  So, I hooked up the cables for a jump start and the alarm immediately blares into action.  It doesn't respond to the remote, and the car won't start with the alarm engaged.  How do I disable or turn-off the alarm so I can jump the car and recharge the battery?

Specific Information:   My girlfriend got the car and remote before we started seeing each other, so some of my information is incomplete.  The car is a '96(?) Jetta, standard shift.  I don't know whether the alarm is factory or after-market, and can't find a manual.  About 5 years ago, she had a Polar Start remote car starter installed (I think model # 2660 - the remote has two buttons). 

After reading a few posts here, I will try the valet switch option, although I don't remember seeing one in the car.  The Polar Start dealer thought we might have to have the car towed in to have someone re-set the alarm.  I would like to avoid the cost of a tow, if possible.
