Hi, are any of you familiar with upgrading honda vehicles with factory security systems?  My cousin has a 2004 Honda CRV and he wants me to install an alarm.  I'm pretty sure it's a base model b/c it doesn't haven't keyless entry or anything.  When I was looking for install information online I noticed that you can buy a lot of OEM Honda equipment and upgrade to the systems that came with the higher end models.

Does anyone know how this compares with a regular aftermarket alarm?  So far I've seen the security system for about $165 and the keyless entry module which I would also have to add for about $85.  I know you can buy aftermarket stuff cheaper but I'm kinda wondering whether it'd be better to just use the OEM equipment.  It looks like the factory unit comes with all the stuff your basic aftermarket alarm would come with (door/hatch pin sensor, glass break sensor, starter cut-off, etc).

From reading over the install manuals it seems pretty straight foward and simple.  Plus no running wire since Honda has all the wiring preinstalled on all vehicles.  You just un-tape the unused harnesses and plug them in to the appropriate modules.  Also any recommendations on where to buy from?  Idk if prices are fairly fixed b/c they are OEM parts.

Anyways any input or advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Aftremarket is usually cheaper, has more flexibility and a way better warranty. While the factory gear MAY be easier to install IF the vehicle was prewired, in most cases this does not happen. As far as a new CRV goes, I have not had one through the doors yet to know if this was the case. Either way I would be looking at the superior aftermarket units that should you ever want to, can be taken out and used in the next vehicle.
Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

yea from what i understand EVERYTHING is prewired. there's not mention of running wires anywhere.  I know from experience that running wires is usually the most time consuming portion of the install...

I guess  I should clarify, I'm not a professional installer nor do I work at a shop.  I'm a do-it-yourselfer but I'm very familiar and comfortable with installing car electronics.  My first alarm was installed by a shop when I didn't know anything but I've since added so many accesories and even upgraded alarm brains so it's pretty much a new system already.

Again because I am not a shop owner nor certified there will probably be no warranty in either case.  I know with most major alarm brands you aren't covered unless your system was installed by an authorized dealer.  As far as flexibility, my cousin doesn't really want anything fancy.  Just the very basics.  So I don't think the limited flexibility of factory units should be much of an issue...

Actually that brings up another issue - does anyone know if installed OEM equipment is covered by standard vehicle warranties if it wasn't installed by the dealer? I would think there'd be some sort of incentive for using their equipment over aftermarket equipment...  Of course they might not be too happy losing out on their ever so reasonable dealer installation fees...
