My wife bought me a remote start for Christmas and had it installed at hhgregg in a 2002 Ford F250 Diesel. They did not hook up the tachometer, the hood safety switch or the Wait to Start light for the glow plugs. It does have a 10 second delay programmed in though. I called today wanting them to hook the thing up the correct way and they gave me excuses about it was too hard to find the tachometer wire. It will start most of the time with the way it is wired now but on a cold morning requiring longer crank times it won't start. That's when I need it most. My remote start module has the proper features built into it to work with a my diesel but I can't get them to hook it up right. How hard is it to hook up these three things and teach the tach? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. BTW it is a 2002 7.3. Automatic. I am technically able to hook it up but don't know if I need a programmer to "talk" to the unit.

Waht company did the install. may have to go to the manager or owner. if still no luck call up code alarm and tell them, may be code give u manural. they at least should hook up the hood pin for safty reason.

Regardless even if you hookup the correct wires you will need to change some of the programming to learn the tach signal. I would go back to hhgreg and raise some hell for doing a half ass install.

Just FYI, on the Pro F-50 there are 3 harnesses. The hood pin wire is gray in the main harness, the tach wire is PURPLE / white in the harness to the right of the main harness. In your case there is probably only 2 harnesses they shouldn't have needed the 3rd one. I haven't hooked up the wait to start on a Pro F-50 in a while not sure offhand if they have a wire for it, or just the built in delay. Also not sure offhand on your vehicle if there is a useable wait to start wire to tap into.

The pro f-50 does not need a wait to start wire in programing you can set it up to wait 20 to 30 sec befor RMST. Mike you are right the car does not have a true wait ti start wire you can get it behind the dash but it will take way to long. if i was you i would go back to hh kick some A#$. That hood pin comes in the box to be put on the car. if you want post back and i will do my best to help you out i even have a install man for this system that i can fax.

I have been talking to a MGR at hhgregg. So far no response. Will call back today. Appreciate all the help. I can't believe they are putting these things out without the hood switch hooked up. Is it absolutely necessary to have a programmer to learn the tach? The manual outline some steps to do this but everything I am reading on the net is that these code alarms can be tricky to program. Otherwise they seem to be good units.

There is no programmer needed. Just get to the desired option in the programming, (using the underdash push button switch and the remote), press the brake and start the car. If it sees a valid tach signal, it will flash the lights every few seconds. Chances are they may not have hooked up the door trigger, which is required for programming so you may not be able to get into programming mode. Also it is easy to mess up and reset all the options back to default, so I wouldn't recommend messing with it.

Open driver door

Push and hold underdash programming button for 10 - 15 seconds.

The park lights should flash 3 times. This is transmitter programming.

Push the push button again. The park lights should flash 4 times. This is the first programming menu.

Push BOTH buttons on the remote. The park lights should flash 1 time. This is option 1 in the first bank. Push both buttons again to advance to option 2, etc. Once you get to the desired option, push the lock button on the remote to toggle the option on or off. The LED shows what state the option is. In your case you would just have to hook up tach, get to the tach learn option, press the brake, and start the car.

HHgregg in florence, KY did the original install. Those guys were young and just learning. Talked to the installer in Lexington, KY and he seems to know what he's talking about. The Lexington store has been very good to deal with so far. Going to take it in this wed. to have them install the kill switch and hook up the tach. We will see how it goes.

Got my truck back today. Still no tach hookup. The guy said he don't know where to tap into the tach at and he says he has 14 years experience. Does anyone know where I can tap into the tach signal on a 2002 Ford Superduty F-250 7.3 Diesel? Is it that hard to find? I know it's in there somewhere. Thanks everybody for the help and the replys.
