Installing a viper 550 remote starter/alarm in 96 Impala SS. Was able to get the car to remote start but then shuts off after a second or two with "pass key fault" light flashing. My VATS resistor was close, but wasn't perfect, so I put the key in its place so I would be positive that the resistance was perfect...Same result. This isn't passing my logic test. Would love to try any suggestions. Thanks guys.

Was the tach learned?

Were you able to remote start the car before wiring the relay for the VATS bypass?
You should be able to remote start vechile with the key in the cylinder.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.passkey/ will start then shuts off -- posted image.

Habe did you remove your vats bypass resistor then insert key to remote start? If you had both in the system it would not start and stay running.

I kinda figured it out. The problem is in the VATS. With the key in the ignition it works like a charm (check engine light is on though) I have built the circuit exactly how DEI says to bypass the VATS with the proper resistance, so I'm not sure how to solve it. I've seen a DEI module for sale at Best Buy for $50, but I'd hate to spend that money when a $2 relay and free resistor should do the trick. Any ideas?

just cut the ribbon and put a resistor to each side of the white wires in the ribbon but make sure that you put it on the side away from the keyswitch been doing them that way since the vettes had them in mid 80s

also you will need to reset tha vats to do make sure your resistor is not in line and hook up the wires back together and turn the ignition on for 15 minutes until the vats light goes out cause you tripped it and it wont start until its reset

By "ribbon" you are reffering to the 2 small gauge wires that control VATS? If I am reading this right you want me to basically eliminate or entirely bypass my VATS. I would like to keep the VATS, but only bypass it when I activate the remote start.

I really figured it out this time. There is a misprint in the viper 550 esp installation guide. It say to connect H2/1 "Blue" or H2/2 "Blue/Black" to 85. I thought it was odd that H2/1 is actually Gray/Black and H2/2 was Light GREEN/ Black, but I figured what the hell. Well, it should have read H3/1 and H3/2. I realize now that the H3 harness is the remote start harness and the problem should have been obvious, but live and learn I guess. Hope this helps someone else not waste 3 days.

V.A.T.S. System Bypass for GM Cars

If you are working on a GM vehicle with a resistor in the key you will need to follow these instructions. With a digital multimeter measure the resistance across the resistor in the key, you will receive one of the following resistance’s: 392, 523, 681, 887, 1.13K, 1.47K, 1.87K, 3.01K, 3.74K, 4.75K, 6.04K, 7.5K, 9.53K, 11.8K. Purchase a resistor with a value within 5% of the measured value and a 30 amp BOSCH style relay and follow the diagram below.

The WHITE/ Black Ign#3 wire is located on the AutoCommand in the 10 pin white Molex connector. The sleeve that contains the V.A.T.S wires will be ORANGE, GREY or BLACK.
