I am trying to install a new LED, per the instructions here red +12v wire to +12 volts, negative with trough a diode to the negative statrer interupt wire. When I try this, the LED flashes slightly dimmer, wether the alarm is armed or not, and flashes brighter when armed.

Any ideas?

The LED is finding a path through the coil of the relay to ground. Add a diode to the (+) input (probably from ignition) of the relay to prevent this.
Ignition -->|-- (pin 86) Relay (pin 85) ----- ground-out-while armed.
Hope this helps.

Should the diode (cathode) stripe be facing the relay?
