unsure of passlock

i want to install a remote start in my 98 cavalier and read that i might need a bypass module to get around the passlock. my car is so stock its not even funny. no power windows, locks, or rear defroster. anyway... i know that 98 and up should have passlock but i was wondering how it works exactly. is there a code in the key or does it have to do with something else?
