I'm not a full time installer like many here, but I've installed about 2 dozen or so over the past 4 years and I've never had any problem with them. I started with the rs900 version 2 and just did a version 7 last week. They all worked just as advertised and for the money you get a lot of features. I never had a call back for something that was a defect of the CS unit. The first ones I installed are still working fine.
I installed one for my brother in law in VT and there's a couple of big astroflex dealers locally who he was friendly with and they were impressed with the range of the remote. I'd say you should get 400' with no metal or concrete obstruction and fresh batteries. If you can't see the vehicle and have to know if it started you ought to consider a 2 way system.
One thing I ALWAYS do is find a tach source. Maybe the tachless system has improved since gen.2, but in the winter, the tachless mode was not reliable. The tach finder feature built into the unit is very handy for confirming your tach source before committing to hooking up to it, and once you program it in you won't get any no starts--at least not from the Crimestopper unit. I'd buy it again--In fact, I'm putting one in for my sister this weekend.

We have installed TONS of the RS-900 VII and the earlier versions too.  (Now we are using the EZ-90s and the RS-1304DP.)  We get 800-1200 feet of real range around here.  Those things are incredible for the money!  We also recommend locating and SOLDERING your tach connection.  We also had inconsistent performance with tachless operation and the extra20 minutes during installation is worth it to avoid calls about cars not starting!

No-- that is actually called the "pit-stop" mode when you do that- it will unlock the doors and put you into the remote start mode- keeping the engine running- without grinding the starter-- It knows if the engine is on or not by the voltage it senses- it is always more with the engine runing....
