THo there are lots of different types of locks(more than 3), the 3 main ones are..

single wire- these use one wire to control a set of 5 wire type relays. They rely on resistors to give different values to control the lock relays. One value will do lock, and another unlock thru that same wire. Some single wire systems may use zero resistance for one of these tasks.

3 wire- these locks use two separate wires to control a set of 5 wire type relays. One wire for lock, another for unlock, and the the third is the polarity(which can be a positive or a negative).

5 wire- these systems are simple, as they have no relays. The lock switch on the door has 5 posts, one input(12volts), two outputs to the lock solenoids, and the other two are commonly ground(tho that can change when the passengers switch is used). The 2 solenoid wires rest at ground thru the switch and if a button is pressed it reverses one of these wires to 12volts, thus activating the solenoid. These locks are getting rare, don't see many anymore....

i know there are many more kinds, but most wiring diagrams reference to type 1,2,3 door lock styles.

Thanks
