It is installed in a 97 Jetta. Car had sat for 3 years before I bought it. New battery and it drove away. All the features worked.
Two weeks ago a small puff of white smoke came out of the steering column. Since then the remote start has stopped working. Everything else works. Can't get in touch with previous owner to find out where it was installed either.
I took the column apart and couldn't find any charred, burnt wires. All the fuses I could find were intact.
I have been trying to find a wiring diagram for the 4001 but all I find is dead links.

Any help or advice would be great.

You let the magic smoke out, once the magic smoke is out a piece of electronics, it is almost impossible to get it to work again.
I would pull the brain out and take it apart, look for burnt traces, popped caps, etc. If it is not something obvious, you could have an authorized dealer send it out for repair, but in most cases it would be cheaper to replace it.
I posted the manual here.
Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Yeah the smoke got out. Avistart 4001 No remote start -- posted image.
I didn't even think of the actual box getting toasted. Will check it out.
I will do some searches on swapping in a new system.
Thanks. Just what I was looking for.
