I have a 91 caprice with the 855 installed and it was working fine for about 6 months. Now when you do the remote start it shows up on the screen that it is running when it's not. The customer says he has to unlock then lock and then it will remote start, any suggestions.

Yeah that is strange. Since it does remote start after you unlock and lock that pretty much tells us the wiring and voltage is fine. It also tells us that the remote is transmitting and recieving..as well as the brain.

It sounds to me like a glitch. What you might want to try first is disconnect the main harness (or battery of the car) for a few minutes..re connect it and try again.

If that fails you might want to check the remote programming or system programming to see if something messed up there.

That is what I was going to do is set everything back to default and reprogram everything, from tach signal on. I'm thinking also a malfunction in the brain.

Yep could be a defect..but try what I suggested first because if it is a glitch (this happens) this will reset it. If that does not fix it then do the default/reprogamming and take it from there.
