I realize there are some topics already about this subject, but I have some more specific requirements, plus most of those posts were pretty old.
So I just bought a 2007 RAV4 Sport (V6/4WD), and want to install a remote starter/security system. I am definitely letting a professional do this, for the obvious reasons, but I have some doubts, and I hope you guys can help me figure this out.
Features I want: Radar/Motion sensor (and want to be able to tell from the remote if it was motion that set off the alarm, or the shock sensor), Extra LCD keyfob, Defroster control and optionally window/sunroof control.
I have 2 dealers I am considering. 1 of them has been in business for a long time, and recommends the CompuStar system. He says (and showed me the remote) that he uses this system himself, and that if the Viper was that much better, he would be selling it. His shop focuses on audio and this kind of work, so that's a good sign, but he couldn't really tell me why the CS was better than the Viper. Another thing that concerned me is that he told me that he just did a few RAV4's, but yet was convinced that every Toyota requires the security module that deals with those passive anti-theft keys. As far as I know, only the Limited edition has this option, so either he is getting his cars mixed up, or his work is accurate. He did say he won't install it if it isn't needed, but it does make me wonder.
I also asked him about a tilt sensor (in case my vehicle gets towed, or someone is jacking it up to steal the wheels), and he said that almost every sensor out there to help prevent wheel theft is useless, and doesn't recommend tilt sensors in general.
I also located another dealer, which sells the Viper systems (I think they could order anything tho). The guy I talked to does sound like he knows what he is talking about, but the business also does other car maintenance work, so not sure if they have a lot of experience with installing advanced alarm /remote start systems. Another concern I had is that they won't install the starter kill feature. They insisted that it does more harm than good. Should this be a showstopper, especially since my car doesn't have the passive anti-theft system (rfid chip in keys)?
Some of the other things that I am worried about is the keyfob. Which one do you guys think is better. The Viper or the CS? I live 30 minutes north of Syracuse, so obviously cold temps are a major concern to me. It looks like range is 3000ft for the CS, vs 1mile for the 5900 series.
I am hoping that some of you have hands experience with both systems, and can recommend which way to go. If there are better choices out there, don't hesitate to mention them either. Thanks guys!
