rear defogger/defroster with remote start

Hello,

I have a 2001 Nissan Maxima with a AstroFlex AstroStart 5204 and I'm trying to figure out how to hook up the (manual HVAC) rear defroster to my AstroStart.  I'm mostly concerned how to hook up the 'car' part.  Relay needed?  Pulsed neg?  Latched?? 

But some .02 on how to hook up the astro start would be nice.

I have channels with the remote start.  I do have an extra manual climate control unit to monkey with. 

Included is a wiring diagram.

Which of these will get me a constant/time/latch??  Any ideas?  I just scanned this from my AstroStart 5204 installation manual.  No, I didn't install it, but I'm trying to tweak it by hooking up the rear defroster.  No where in my manual does it say ~200mA.  Just need a lil advice.  Do I need a relay?

program level 7 as Utility 1      2,3,6,8,9, up hit the brakes. put them down, hit the brake again.

THEN goto level 11 (utility programing) program utility 1 for 8 min.   1,2,4, and6 up. Hit the brake, put them down, hit the brake....done.

You have programmed the white wire to latch for 8 min. to do your defrost.  (p2-15)

No relay is needed.......

It looks like you can hit pin 14 of the smart entrance unit with a short ground pulse to simulate actually pushing the button.  This way, the rear defroster would shut off under its normal shut down guidelines (temp, time, whatever it uses). 

I always prefer using switch side of controls rather then relay side because you will end up with a better simulation of how the car operates if you mimic the controls rather then just drive the relays.

Just a side note, I can really only use one (first) output on my 2 way LCD 4 button remote, i have a spare 2nd remote that has 6 buttons and works with outputs 1-4.  And yes, so far my defroster works on Pin 14 like KPierson described.

My newest question is:

(A lil off topic) My installed hooked up my outputs (3/4) to the key cylinder locks/unlocks and I just figured it out now. 

but when I unlock my car door (armed) with the key, it sets off my car alarm.  This doesn't bother me but I'm just trying to figure out if I need these cylinder switches taking up my ouputs.  Wondering if this is the right way, or something is wrong.  Idealy, I gotta switch output 1 to 4 so I can reclaim my defroster on output 1 with my LCD remote.

With your outputs hooked to the key cylinder wires you SHOULD be able to raise and lower the windows if your outputs are set to validity (output signal as long as you hold the button down).

There is NO way on most alarms to disable the aftermarket alarm with the key.  If there was, this would be a huge security flaw (just like the security gap that Nissan includes in most of its vehicles right from the factory).

I'm not sure I would put the defroster on a dedicated output.  I think I would hook it up to the starter output or something so it automatically comes on every time you remote start the car.  I doubt it will hurt anything, and how often do you remote start when it is warm out?

But what I don't get is how door key cylinder look/unlock has to do with raising & lowering the Windows?  Only thing I can think would be after your car is running, take out the key, and you could still have access to the windows.  I guess its not setup the way you described above and I could reclaim my outputs huh?  As far as I know, I would need a device to raise and lower the windows.  Not really a big deal.

Yep, thats what I thought about the unlocking with a key, shouldn't ever be an issue.

Last question,

Some newer alarms have onboard temp sensors.  If the car  gets below a certain temprature it will start the car to heat it up.

On a lot of newer Nissans you can raise and lower the windows with extended (-) triggers on the lock and unlock wires.  To test this out on your car, insert your key in the key cylinder and turn and hold it in the 'unlock' position.  The windows should lower, if your specific car has this feature.  If they go down, you can raise them back up by turning and holding the key in the 'lock' position.
