Greetings,

I do lots of cellular & Nextel hardwired vehicle handsfree kit installs. Most of these kits have a radio mute option(basically a lead that goes to ground when you use the phone). I was wondering if there is a data base available for locating the mute lead on factory control heads. Ford vehicles have this lead. Do others, and if so is this information available someplace. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

Sorry I don't have the answer you are searching for, but surely saw something that interests me. I have a '05 Explorer with the simple AM/FM single CD radio. There is no mute option on the radio face. I suppose this radio won't support a hands free mute (or am I wrong?) but somewhere I saw that a relay could be installed to shut down and power up the radio when the cell phone is in use or shut off. Since you're into handsfree kit installs, could you explain how to do this? Thanks much. shut off.

using a relay you can shut down the radio while the phone is in use...

Radio mute goes to one side of the coil

Cut the accessory wire and connect it to the trigger and the other side of the coil.

then connect 87a to the acc lead going into the head unit.

Check all advice given with a meter

Your Ford radio still may have the mute feature. If you pull out the radio (you will need ford removal tool) there should be a square 20 pin connector which may or may not have a connector plugged into it. Looking at the back of the radio the middle row far right pin is the radio mute pin. Ground to this pin should mute radio. Most h/f kits have a lead that will do this for you.
