Go to the dealer, and have them replace the cable... Im pretty sure they were still cable driven then...

The cable could either be broken at the gauge or at the transmission. It might be easier to check at the transmission first as there is not much slack to pull the cluster all the way out.
If it is the cable good luck replacing it. (PITA)
