i need to get the 12 volts down to 4 aaa batteries?

i don't know where to start or how to do it?

please what do i need to get and how to connect it up??

How much current are you looking for?  You could do it with a simple voltage divider (two resistors) but your current output would be really low.  You best bet would be to use a voltage regulator.  You can find adjustable regulators that require setting the voltage using a resistor and a capacitor, and they usually have 1A of output power.

4 tripple a's dont have that much current so the resistors to cut the voltage down would probably be the better idea cost wise. what is it your trying to power? a 50 ohm resistor will cut voltage by 1 volt.
