delayed function til trunk opens

Ok, this is my goal.....

I have a fiberglass trunk setup that I has a "shelf" at the top of the trunk.....it has a slot to house a single din CD or DVD player, I've had a CD player in there for the longest but now want to switch it up and install a 7 inch flip out screen.

My question is, is there a way for me to wire it up to where it is off when the trunk is closed, but as soon as I open the trunk (the trunk light comes on) it cuts on and flips up?  Because with it extended the trunk wont close.

Any ideas?

One concern I would have is slamming the trunk with the display out and thus destroying the display.

You may think it will never happen, but what if someone is checking it out and wants to see how much clearance there is and closes the trunk.  You say there isn't enough clearance, and I doubt you could ever get it to retract fast enough to protect itself.

As far as wiring it up to trunk switch that seems like a pretty simple task.  When you power the unit up does it automatically flip out or do you need to push a button on it?

Here are general guidelines:

Trunk pin allows "open screen" command and at the same time releases trunk deadbolt on trunk hinge.

Once trunk has fully opened, deadbolt impeads trunk closure until screen fully closed. Once screen is fully closed, deadbolt releases allowing trunk closure. Make a deadbolt using a doorlock actuator which doesn't require constant power to hold like a trunk release solenoid.

That sounds like a good plan.....anyway you can draw out a diagram with pretty pictures for me? LOL

You will need to find out what type of trigger you have for your trunk light.  You will need a volt meter or a fest light.  I would assume that the light bulb is supplied with constant 12 volts and the ground circuit is completed when the trunk is opened.  To verify this you will need to remove the bulb from the socket, set your meter to DCVolts scale, to the 20 volt scale if it is not an autoranging meter.  Ground the black lead of the meter and place the red lead to one of the bulb connections.  And then the other, once you determing which one has 12 volts on it, you will need to get a very good friend, one that will not leave you locked in the trunk, make sure he has the keys and get him to close you in the trunk.  Make sure that there is still 12 volts on that same wire.  May require a flashlight if you do not have an backlit meter.  

This is how to wire the relay.   30 and 86 connect to the positive wire you just found.  85 connects to the other wire of the bulb socket.  87 to the red wire of your radio.

If you turn the radio off and then turn the key off, and then turn the key back on, does the radio open or do you have to press the power button to get it to come back on?  If it does not open automatically you may have to put a normally closed momentary push button switch in the trunk.  If you need to know how to wire the switch let me know.
