cruise control after engine conversion

Hi I have recenntly carried out an engine conversion on my car which involved putting a recent engine in an older car. i am from Australia so would not expect you to know the models involved. I have got the cruise control working but I would like to get the little light on the dash going that lets you know when the cruise is on or off. The cruise control has an off switch so i guess i could take a momentary switch off that just need to work out how to run a relay taht would turn off the cruise when the motor is turned off. After reading my previous post does not really explain what i need. All i need the circuit for is so the light on the dash is illuminated when the cruise control is on and off when cruise control is off. The cruise control is switched on/off by the same switch. I also need the light to be turned off when the engine is turned off. All this would be run totally seperate from the cruise control. I was wondering if momentary to constant output circuit on this forum would do the job. If not any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Provide your car and cruise control details. Aussies do not have "Australian" (only) cars anymore, nor probably "local" cruise controls. But if you are able to switch your cruise control on and off, you are probably switching +12V to it and that should power your dash switch. In fact I can't understand why an engine change would effect the cruise control circuitry including that indicator light.

Hi Thanks for the reply THe car is a 1999 NL Fairlane the engine is fron a 2005 Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo. I am using the ecu from the turbo motor to control motor only as it has electronic throttle and the cruise control is run from this.While I am using the original ecu in car to control climate control etc. THe original cruise control was operated by this ecu and was a mechanical unit. Hence it is not compatible with the electronic throttle on new motor and as the signal is communicated via the canbus i cannot isolate a wire to use for the dash light. This is why i thought making a small circuit woulsd help. Thanks Steven

Ah, canbus. When you said older, I presumed ancient - like when such transplants less regulated. (You have this conversion including its brakes approved don't you!?) So are you saying that you have a momentary "power on" cruise control signal that you can use?

Use an ignition powered source to power the cruise as well. When you turn the key off, the cruise will power down as well.

So, as per my first reply, why not use that switch to power the indicator?

Yes that what I would like to do use the cruise control switch to power a relay that turns the light on off. Just want to make sure i am doing it right. Conversion is being monitored by engineer who has signed everything off so far. Cheers Steve

So why not connect the LED (or bulb) to the switch?

Sorry, I confused this thread... What you want is a toggle type circuit - ie, the momentary +12V on-off switch toggles the cruise control's ON indicator. See trying to turn off sub using switch. Synchronising the indicator to match the cruise controllers on-state might be an issue, but if both circuits are off after a power up (IGN on) then it shouldn't be an issue. To actually ascertain the cruise control's state, eg for such synchonisation or if the controller switches itself off, then you'd need a canbus reader unless there is +12V from the controller when it is active. (I'd probably hack into the controller to try to find a suitable source rather than the expense etc of trapping canbus signals.)
