Could someone please tell me why I would use a relay to splice my turn-on lead as opposed to twisting/soldering them onto the original? I'll be upgrading the wiring in my car to accomodate 5 amps and a fan, so if there are any advantages to using a relay I certainly will.

I would surely use a relay for that, mainly because of the fan. The reason: the head unit can not source much current off the remote turn on lead, if you draw too much you will overheat the remote output from the head unit. The fan it self probably draws about the max current the head can give.

So let me get this straight: a 30 amp SPDT relay takes in a small amount of current and gives out up to 30 amps?

exactly, think of it as a switch controlled by electricity, only takes around 170 mA ( .170 A) to control up to 30 A

Just for specs, most decks will supply 200ma of current. This is barely enough for two amps, if you need to go over this then you should add a relay.

so i should use a relay for my remote turnon for my 2 amps. i'm adding a jbl600.1 (60amp) and 80.4(40amp). how would i wire that. remote turnon to relay and the relay would split to the 2 amps?
