Hi there.  I have been searching all over the net for help on this, and I think I may have found a place to ask the question:

I have a '98 Jetta GL.  I was stuck with the Ignition Switch curse- basically the switch in the car went bad.  Car would turn on, but no A/C, no DRL, no headlamps.  After some reseach, I found out it was the ignition switch.  Unfortunately for me, in order to repair this problem, you have to pull off the airbag, steering wheel, and the entire ignition switch housing ( http://www.zpipedragon.com/ignition_switch.htm).  When I got to the part where I use the puller, the "splined collar" refuses to budge.  Right now I have the new switch plugged in, so I use the keys to unlock the steering wheel and a screwdriver to start the car.  Yay - so "ghetto fabulous".

So rather than continue to use the screwdriver, I want to install some toggle switches and a push button starter.  Im thinking 2 switches for now- one to turn the car & run electricity to the accessories (headlamps, a/c), one for the accessories (radio).  Does anyone know how I should wire this?

There are 5 wires that run out of the plug that the ignition switch goes into.  Red, Black, RED / Blk, BROWN / Red, & Blk / YELLOW.  I've been looking through the wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual and I believe the Red is a hot line, RED / Blk goes to the starter, Blk / YELLOW handles the radiator, horn, wipers.  Black is for lighting, and the BROWN / Red is for the radio.  If I have read these incorrectly, someone please let me know.

So if I have this right, I need to have one switch that has Red coming in, and has 3 wires out - Black, Blk/Yel, and a wire to the push button.  The push button with have the in from the switch and RED / Black out.  The last switch will have a splice off the Red going in and the BROWN / Red out to the stereo.

Have I got this correct, or does someone know of a better way to run this wiring.  Also, what type of switches would be recommended, and should I install relays and what kind, or will the existing relays in the vehicle work?

Anything will help.  Im just trying to get out of a guy charging me 200 bux to replace the damn ignition switch, and I think some switches and button would look sick.  Im not so worried about security - if someone wanted to steal the car they would, and you still need the key to unlock the steering wheel.

Thanks!

Do you have an Ohm meter to Physicaly Trace the wires?

I did the exact same thing with my 91 civic, but for a different reason. I lost my keys for it and had to hotwire it to get it home. I used switches and they ended up burning out because the switches couldn't handle the constant amperage. My suggestion would be to use relays, then small switches with a negative trigger to turn them on. You would need one toggle switch for ignition, one for accessories, and a push button for crank. I disconnected the steering column lock so I didn't need to unlock the column, and I hid the crank push button in an awesome place so if you didn't know it was there, you'd never find it. then I just placed the toggle switches on the dash nice and neat. refer to using negative trigger to positive output in Diagrams, use the 12+ constant at ignition switch for feed to relay and coil (86 and 87), ground trigger from switch (85), and from relay (30) to ignition/accesory and crank. need more help...just ask!

I tell it like it is...

I was wondering if you still had the wiring diagrams for the work you did on the 91 civic. I have a 1990 civic dx, and I want to do something like what you have done, also, do you have any instructions for how to diable the column lock? Thank you in advance for any information you can give me.
