Hi all...new to this board and was hoping someone could offer an explanation on this relay phenomenom I'm seeing.
I tried to create a simple circuit employing a common 12v 30a bosch relay as a 'power relay'. It's purpose is to pull voltage from the battery and feed it straight back into the fusebox, augmenting the existing factory harness under the dash which has wires over 30 years old. There is no splicing going on, just the use of taps. Here's how I set it up (and it's not working!):
85 - GND (12gauge)
86 - Hooked to ACC/IGN hot (12g)
87 - Hooked to another fuse which is also ACC/IGN hot (12g)
30 - Battery 12v fused constant hot (8g)
The idea was that when the ACC/IGN hot trigger ciruit (85/86) was juiced, it would energize the coil and send full 12v back into the same ACC/IGN hot circuit. When the car is turned off, this should remove the 12v from the (85/86) circuit, de-energize the coil (30/87), and effectively shut off the ACC circuit...but it's not doing that; (30/87) remains constant hot with the car off...and I know I'm not using cheap relays. It this what's called latching? I'm definately puzzled by how this happens.
Would this circuit work for me?

Thanks for any insight! MoPar!

Sounds like one of the wires is hot all the time. That would confuse me too. Here is a latching relay circuit.

Thanks for the reply John, I actually don't want it to latch, or stay on.
<<Sounds like one of the wires is hot all the time.>>
30 is hot all the time. 86 is hot only when the car is on. When energized, 30 hooks to 86. When 86/85 is de-energized I wanted it to cut off power from 30, but 86 stays hot. This is the part I'm trying to prevent. 86 should be hot only when the car is on or in ACC.

I know you don't want a latching relay .I posted it so that you could study it and figure out how it works. I think the coil of the relay may be latching from a draw of power from the lights. You may need to stick a couple of Diodes into the circuit to stop the latch action.

John thanks for the diagram. I took one from this site also and modified it...can you give me your opinion? I am still trying to accomplish the following:
-Have the IGN hot circuit activate the left relay
-The left relay activates the right relay (which is meant to serve as a power relay)
-The right relay sends full 12v via thicker gauge wire right back into the IGN hot circuit
-When the car is off, the left relay should de-activate thus shutting off the power relay on the right as well
Will this work as described? Thanks again...

I think I answered my own question...it won't work properly that way...
