I have been searching desperately for speciications on 30/40 relays.

Could it be that there is a different rating for the NC and NO contacts? That is different when the coil is energized or not.

Is there any manufacturer site that gives specs? I could not find any.

Usually the normally open contact can handle more current than the normally closed contact on the double throw relays, because they can generate higher pressures using the energized relay coil than the return spring is able to muster.
Here's a datasheet for one that handles 35/20A resistive, 100/40A inductive surge: G8JN
