flashing headlights when locking car

i have a 99 cavalier with factory keyless entry(lock/unlock & trunk release).  currently whenever i (un)lock the doors pressing the button only my dome light interior lights up.  i want to do a set-up where my parking lights would flash when locking the doors.  i searched on this forum and i believe i may need a relay for it, but im not certain if i also need a diode(s).  another thread suggested that i take the dome light connection and connect it to the parking lights, again using a relay.  would anyone have a diagram of the wiring for me please? and what steps should i go about and do it?  i've been trying to do this for a while now and i know its best to ask those who are experienced and experts in these areas.  please feel free to e-mail me also for directions or questions fst100@psu.edu

You would be best off using your door actuator signals and diode isolating them to a coil on a timer relay.  Each time the actuator fires (either way) it will trigger the timing relay.  It would be nice to have another relay that only allows the timer relay to fire when the ignition is off.  You can then use the contacts to control the parking lights.

Tell me exactly what you are looking for and I can tell you how possible it will be to do.  As a design engineer I would recomend 3 inputs - ignition, door lock, door unlock.  Then, one output, parking lights.

I can custom program a microcontroller that will monitor the ignition input.  If the ignition is on then it wont' look for door lock pulses.  If the ignition is off then it will look for either lock or unlock pulses.

If it detects a 'lock' pulse then it will output 2 (-) pulses out.  If it detects an 'unlock' pulse it will output 1 (-) pulse out.  It would even be possible to add a 2nd output for horn honk, if so desired.  With the integration of a microcontroller ANYTHING is possible.  It could be set up to output 10 pulses per detection, or whatever.
