Hello, I am working on a 2004 impala. I had a dealer key made for it. The key fits and turns the ignition properly through the cycle, but when placed in the crank or start position, nothing happens. I also noticed the power windows, locks, and trunk release don't work in any of the key positions, but the aftermarket radio does.
When the key is in the run position I can hear the fuel pump prime. and the only light that is lit is the check engine light.
any help is greatly appreciated as i'm in the military and have limited funds and would like to figure this out myself.
Thanks, will

You might be having the classic Passlock 2 failure.  Do any keys work?

Passlock 2 Ignition switches are known to fail and cost plenty to replace.  Seach this site on "Passlock 2" for additional info on symptoms and ways to resolve the issue.

Also if you have the Theft light on or flashing you might be in tamper mode.  Try placing the key in the ignition & turning to ON.  Leave it alone for 15 minutes, then try to start it.

Soldering is fun!

hey thanks for the reply. I have heard about the passlock failure but was unsure if this base police edition came equipped with it. There is also no message center in my gauge cluster just fuel/speed/temp gauges then some dummy lights. and the only one that does anything is the check engine light.
I have been reading about the BCM but have yet to find a solid diagnostic procedure for it. I just havent heard of any symptoms as far as no power windows, locks, dome light, or truck working.
thanks for the help and keep it coming! lol,

I would image your car has the Passlock 2.  Go to the Bulldog Security web site and look up your car in the Wiring Diagrams section.  They have some nice pictures of the wires to look for to verify the presence of Passlock 2.

Do any keys actually work & start the car?  Did you try the previously listed procedure for clearing a Tamper Mode fault?
