I just bought a 2003 Chevy S10 that has the optional (but not premium) RDS enabled radio with CD and tape. An installer friend of mine told me I would need to run an ignition wire and a bunch of other crap. I'm not familiar with RDS radios all that much, so I'm not sure what the details are on the new current sensing radios. Is this going to be a regular aftermarket install or are there going to be lots of complications? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...CTW

Your friend probably figured that the vehicle had GM's new Class 2 wiring system, in which many of the vehicle's electronic functions are built in to the factory radio. In those situations, an aftermarket head unit install requires you to relocate the factory head unit using a special t-harness, and a separate turn on wire has to be sent from the ignition harness to the aftermarket deck as there's not one in the harness.

Fortunately for you, this truck does NOT have the class 2 wiring. You can verify this by removing the factory head unit and seeing if your door chimes still work. If they do, then you don't have the class II wiring and there will be no complications with the install. I just had an '03 S10 extreme with RDS in a couple weeks ago and it did NOT have the Class 2 wiring.

To install an aftermarket deck in this vehicle, you'll need the 70-2003 harness, a GM antenna adapter, and the 99-2001 dash kit.

Thanks so much for the help. It'll have to wait until the morning to see if the chimes still work or not. If the Xtreme didn't have the Class 2 wiring, I'd be willing to bet dollars to pesos that my ZR2 doesn't either. Thanks for your help buddy!!

Just out of curiousity, does that mean that there will be a switched accessory wire present, or will I have to run one of those anyways?

Yea the switched wire should be there. It's not in the class 2 systems cuz in those the radio is turned on via class 2 data signals, not a positive 12 volt signal.
