I'm trying to replace the head unit in my 2001 GMC Yukon and having some issues. I got the GM standard 88-up and antenna adapters. They work fine. The head gets power, reception, etc. But, occasionally, all sound will stop. I thought about shorted speaker wires but the factory system worked great and I haven't touched any of that. Shutting the back door always kills it.

There is a second, smaller plug that goes into the stock unit. It has red tabs and two rows of pins. I thought it was just the connector for the aux tape but when I disconnect it from the stock head, all sound stops too. I think I need to somehow wire this in or something. Does it have a remote turn on for a factory amp or something?

The system is not a Bose or RDS. Does have Onstar but I don't care if that works. Anyone successfully replace the head in a Yukon without rewiring all the speakers?

So, after talking with Scosche tech support and playing with a multimeter, I learned that Onstar trucks have an amp hidden away. The pink wire on the second harness is a remote turn on for a factory amp. I patched the Kenwood's remote lead into it and everything works great now.

Can't wait to have the money to put real amps and speakers in but this works for the time being. Hopefully my blood and sweat will help someone with their install.
