Im installing a 2 channel amp to a store bought stereo. Do I need to ground the amp and the stereo to the same physical ground point, i.e same exact location on the chasis. What would happen if they were grounded to different points on the chasis?

I havent ever grounded the head unit and an amp to the same point and havent had any problems. So the answer is nothing will happen. You should be fine.
