I have doen many of these volvo's. usually 10.4" and a seperate dvd player in the glove box.  It can be done with a little prep work.  here is how i tackle this one.

1. take a 12x12  sheet of abs with the sony becasue the dvd is built in you might need a larger sheet ,  about an inch and a half for the edges drill a hole and drop and 1 1/4 inch bold through each hole,(one towards the front of the vehicle and one towards the rear. drill a hole in the center for your wires.            2. get a 1/2inch plywood i usually use the same size as abs plastic but you will proball use a little bigger on the plywood to help support the sony item.  drill the matching holes on that the same as abs so they will line up.  3. remove the trim around the sunroof  this will allow you to slide the abs in the headliner line it up as centered as possible . then drop the bolts through the headliner line up your plywood to the outside of the headliner and attach with the matching nuts. i usually put one screw towads the front be carefull try to go in one of the indintations so it wont hit the sunshade.

as far as air bags they are everywhere this thing could flot with all of those deployed.  i usually run the wires down the passanger side down the b pillar.

catching power couldnt be any easier. your arm rest slides outpull the lever and pull towards rear of car.you will see a panel covered in carpet it pulls up , once insde you will see a two harness plug. purple is ignition black is ground.you will want  catch a seperate ground though i have experinced engine noise through this ground. antnennas ...there is a adapter for this car but save your self the trouble  use  a wire less onewith mulit station selection audiovox makes a nice one that works out good for me. this cars bark is meaner then its bite any confident installer should have no problems with this vehicle.  there is also a problem with remotes interfearing with the factory radio remote , if this happens you can just pop the remote eye sensor off the radio its the BLACK/ clear panel on the lower left of the radio and just cover the ir sensors from inside blocking any interfearance  you will lose your wireless remote functions if you have that option, most volvos dont come with it you have to buy it seperate.  good luck

I've done 2 of them they aren't too bad. Couple tips:
1. The sunroof trim is hard plastic instead of the normal rubber type. Be careful with it! I usually pop a side out and then the front out and the rest comes out easy.
2. The factory wiring runs parallel to the car about 10 inches in from the drivers side of the car. Just follow the factory wiring and you should be fine with no airbag issues. And yes, there are airbags everywhere.
3. Power wise I run ALL my wiring to the rear of the car where the antenna box is. There is also a fusebox in the back on the left side. I put any modules and fm mods above the fusebox. All fuses at the fusebox are constant, but there are unused relay spots that have accessory power.
4. You will not be able to put a wired fm modulator in this car. I don't think anyone makes an adapter for this car you will not find any antenna disconnect that you can use. This car uses the fiber optic based MOST system. Use a wireless fm mod OR a wired one, but cut off the plug and strip about 2 inches of the wire off and place it near the antenna. Works acceptable, but definately not optimal. May consider selling systems for these cars as "headphones only".
5. For mounting I use metal brackets. Secure them to the metal beam in the front and then secure your tv to them. It is one of the tighter cars you will do.
Good luck,
Mike

Thanks guys for the tips!

Do you think I should use a non all-in-one unit because of weight issues? I don't have the car in front of me yet, but just wondering if I end up going the abs route, will the monitor be stable enough? The sony has built is speakers & ir, so I'll probably just avoid the modulator all together.

  Thanks again

I wouldn't say you have to avoid the all-in-ones, just make sure you incorporate the front beam somehow. I put the side of the tv farthest to the front of the vehicle directly into the beam which is a solid mount. Most tvs I've seen have most of the weight distributed in this area which is good. Then the rear I just sandwich the headliner with some metal and screw into that just to add stability and get rid of any gaps. Not the most solid mount, but definately not a bad mount either.

Have you ever actually used these antenna adapters on the XC90? If so, where do they plug in? Surely the VL10 and VL20 aren't fiber optic compatible. As far as I know there is NO antenna adapter and no aux input available for the XC90. Only option is wireless modulators or running a wired modulator in a wireless fashion. I'll stick with that until someone else can prove otherwise.

Thanks  again Mike & InstallerNy for all the tips!  Yes you are right MIke, there is NO way to connect a wired modulator to the XC90 as the antenna is digital and has no physical plug to disconnect...
