I posted thgis question awhile ago and got one response that didn't help.
I installed an alpine cva-1005 in a 2003 Nissan Maxima and for some reason when the unit is in the dash it will not open. If I take it out of the dash and hold straight it opeons fine everytime.Just when it's in the dash on that angle it will not open. Alpine says it needs to be cleaned. Send it out for $95.00 and it will be cleaned. If the car is in the driveway on an incline it opens fine everytime.
Any thoughts.

Sounds like you may need to stablize your radio in your dash.  What I mean is that when you park your car a certain way the body flexes a little, causing your dash and radio alingmnet to change.  Yes, a car is made of metal, but you must remember it is designed to crimp in certain types of accident which also leaves it vunerable to flexing.

What kind of installation did you use for this. The ISO DIN or the installation cage and a kit ?

I used an installation kit from METRA with the mounting cage. At first I didn't use the cage I mounted it directly to the OEM bracket and I thought maybe there was some kind of stress involved on the unit so I installed the cage and didn't use the OEM mounting and the same thing. It sounds wierd but TRUE.

That does sound weird. Normally the ISO DIN way, there is no stress on the body of the CVA unit that would cause a no op error on the unit. With my experience on these units, I would say that you have a weak gear/belt on the screen mechanism. Can you tell is the screen has any scratches on the front of the monitor anywhere that would indicate some binding of the track ?

What happens if you pull the screen out and hold it at an angle, then will it open or does it stay closed. If it stays closed I am guessing the belt is slipping, it is a belt drive system and not gears right? I dont sell alpine so bare with me.

I opened the unit and it has gears. If I pull the unit out of the car and put it on the bench and place a piece of 3/4 MDF under the front it will not open. If I lay it flat it opens all the time.

this same thing happened to me with mine. You have to take the unit apart, sounds scary huh haha not really undo all the screws and pull the cover off and blow off all the gears and make sure they nothing is jammed in it. Then make sure if your  using the side brackets that lock it place with the cage, make sure there not screw in realllly tight. Try that and it should work. Atleast it worked for me.

I sent the unit to ALPINE the other day. I tried to blow the unit out and still I wasn't as lucky as you.I'm still waiting to hear from them on their finds.
