2004 Nissan Titan VSS location needed.

Can anyone please help.  I bought a Navigation System to put in my 2004 Nissan Titan.  I am having trouble finding out where the VSS cable is and what color it is.  I am also not sure where to conect the wire for the reverse lights or backup lights. It wants me to connect the wire to circuit that is only powered in reverse.  Can any help or provide and info on this for me.  I need to figure out these 2 wires for my navigation system to work.

First of all let me apologize for taking so long to get the info to you (real busy at work these past few weeks), anyway I had time to look up the wiring diagram for you. The VSS wire may be an issue (I'll get to that in a minute) The positive wire for your reverse lights is easy though.

The reverse wire (powered when in reverse) is located at the Back-up lamp relay. The relay is in the fuse and relay box located next to the battery, the relay should be labeled as the "back up lamp relay" on the cover. You'll need to gain access to the underside of the relay box to get to the wiring. What you are looking for is a Green wire with a White stripe (pin #5 on the relay), or you may use the Yellow wire with a Red stripe (pin #7 on the relay). Either will work, Pin 5 is power directly to the reverse lights when in reverse, so if you tap into this wire and it breaks later on --- well no reverse lights! If you don't tow a trailer I would suggest using Pin 7 as this wire goes to the tow wiring, for the reverse lights on the trailer. (the relay will have the pin #'s printed on the bottom of the relay where the connector blades stick out).

Ok easy one done, Now to the VSS wiring. The issue here is that the speedometer gets the speed signal from the ABS Unit through the CAN (Controller Area Network) wiring. Unfortunatly you can not tap into this wire, as all sorts of information is transmitted along these two wires to all the various control units. :-(   Howeverthere is a wire which goes to the factory installed navigation unit, which I believe will suit your needs. I could not locate in the manual what info is transmitted along this wire, it is only labeled as going to the 'display control unit' with the pin labeled as 'speed'. This is a White wire with a Red stripe located at Pin 29 at the back of the instrument cluster in harness connector M24, this is a white connector with 40 pin connections (there may be 40 total wires but probably not as Nissan does not always use every available slot in a connector). To check this wire and see if it is suitable, connect a DVOM to the wire and look for ~5V signal, If your DVOM has an occsiliscope you are looking for a 'square' signal that varies frequency when speed is increased/decreased, If you don't have one, then I suggest using an older needle type volt meter that will be easy to see the needle "jump" to ~5V, where the "jumping" will increase/decrease with speed. If this is the case then you've got your wire, if not, then I think you may be SOL.

if you happen to have a logic probe, that will make the job very easy to test the wire.
